Buying a Bed

The right bed is one which is supportive, comfortable and will fulfil all your requirements. First and foremost, be aware that the comfort and firmness of any bed is directly related to the size and weight of the person lying on it. So be honest with yourself: assess your and your partner’s weight and decide whether you are above or below average.

Once you have established this, try out a broad selection of beds, ranging from soft through medium and firm to extra firm. This will give you an understanding of how the different firmness levels react to your size and weight, and help you form a picture of your ideal bed.

Although these are the standard sizes, you may find that some suppliers offer in-between sizes such as extra-long singles or narrow doubles, or in some cases custom orders where the bed may be made to your size requirements. It is worth remembering, however, that it may be difficult or expensive to obtain bed linen or headboards to fit non-standard sizes. For further information on odd sizes, please contact us directly.

In some cases you may just wish to replace a worn out mattress. There is nothing to prevent you from doing so, but it is worth being aware of some important factors.

First, establish the type of base you intend to put your new mattress on. If it is an old divan base, check whether it is a hard topped design or a sprung type, as this will affect how your new mattress will feel. Also check its condition: your new mattress is expected to last up to 10 years, so you have to ask whether your old base will last another 10 years.

If your base is a bedstead or bed frame, check that it is in good order. Be aware that most bed frames have rigid or semi-rigid surfaces, so any mattress will tend to feel firmer on this type of base than on a sprung divan base, which allows your mattress to flex more readily to your body shape.

Finally, check the measurements of your base. You would be surprised at the number of people who get their new mattress home only to find they have purchased the wrong size.

In general, most beds and mattresses are recommended to last in the region of ten years, accepting that they were of good quality in the first place. If the product was a budget priced item, however, the useful life may be considerably shorter.

It’s best to remember that beds are like most products, in so far as you get what you pay for. It has been our experience that many customers undervalue a good bed and are often reluctant to spend as much as they probably should. Ultimately, how much you spend will be dictated by your disposable income, but we would advise you to be influenced by comfort and quality, not price.
